DILO – Day In the Life Of

People Diagnostic Tools

What people say they do on a shift, what they think they do and what they actually do are 3 very different answers. What their manager thinks they do will also be a different answer!

The only thing to do is Watch them and discuss your findings.

We are not talking about a covert operation but a simple shadowing exercise, observing what they are doing without getting involved, without interrupting and without being intrusive.

Using a DILO (Day in the life of) is an analysis tool to study how people spend their day.

🔵Spend the day with the individual, see what they do, log the activity (minute by minute).

🔵Review the outcomes with the individual and see how it compares to what they think.

🔵What does the individual think they do and what would they like a day to look like – is there a difference?

🔵Bring in the manager to compare what they think that individual does and should do.

Time spent studying and watching people work will provide a wealth of information about how the business ticks.  Just as importantly, it provides crucial information in formulating development programmes, individual training plans, skills courses and organisational competency needs.
